WHO ARE WE, WHAT ARE WE AND WHERE ARE WE GOING
KVART is an association for contemporary art that was founded in 2006 in Trstenik, outside the city center and somewhat beyond expectations.
We were founded by Milan Brkić, Rino Efendić, Željko Marović, and Boris Šitum, and over time a number of artists, collaborators, and neighbors have joined us. Today, we are a collective that is constantly evolving, yet remains connected to the same space and way of thinking.
KVART operates according to its own rules. Our artistic language is not always predictable, but it is always direct. Our work includes exhibitions, actions, and various forms of interventions in public space. Sometimes it is planned, sometimes it emerges along the way, but it always arises from the context in which we operate.
Trstenik is not just our address, but also our inspiration, material, and audience. It is a space we learn from, respond to, and create within. We focus on connecting people who share the same space but often never meet. In other words, we try to break that quiet, passive neighborhood where everyone knows everything, but no one reacts to anything.
Our work exists somewhere between art and everyday life. We create projects that enter public space, communicate with people, and sometimes surprise them—as well as ourselves. We prefer a simple, unobtrusive approach, without big words, but with a clear idea.
Since 2021, with the activation of Gallery Kvart, in addition to our own work we have been encouraging guest exhibitions, proving ourselves to be good hosts. We gained a space, but we didn’t lose our way of working—we still think beyond the gallery walls. Alongside Gallery Kvart, we also manage a poster site in Cista Provo, bringing contemporary art to the Dalmatian hinterland. Since 2008, in an underground garage in Trstenik, we have been systematically expanding our art collection, which now includes more than ten works in its permanent display.
KVART has become a close-knit community—partly artistic, partly neighborly, partly improvised, but very much alive.
